How to fund an accessible smart home

Most families pay themselves. Some programs can cover part — or a lot — of home accessibility work. These guides tell you who to ask and what to bring. They do not tell you that you qualify.

SAH, SHA, TRA, and HISA — different programs, different caps, different offices. FY 2026 amounts from VA.gov.

CA Department of Rehabilitation

Vocational rehabilitation can fund assistive technology tied to a job goal. Start with a DOR application, not a shopping list.

Developmental disability

Regional Centers

Lanterman Act services through California’s 21 Regional Centers. Home adaptations must be in the IPP. DDS Service Code 104.

Work injury

Workers’ compensation

California can treat necessary home modifications as medical treatment after an industrial injury. Claims administrator + treating doctor — not a published price list.

Policies

Insurance (LTC, health, home)

Long-term-care policies sometimes cover home mods. Medicare generally does not. Read the policy; don’t assume.
