Which program is which
| Program | FY 2026 / current published max | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|
| Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) | Up to $126,526 (FY 2026, effective 1 Oct 2025) | VA Loan Guaranty / SAH agent. Apply with VA Form 26-4555. |
| Special Home Adaptation (SHA) | Up to $25,350 (FY 2026) | Same housing-grant path as SAH. Different disability list. |
| Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) | Up to $50,961 (SAH-eligible) or $9,100 (SHA-eligible) for a family member’s home | Same SAH/SHA family of grants. |
| Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) | Lifetime $6,800 (service-connected / 50%+ SC addressing other conditions) or $2,000 (other VA-enrolled veterans). Not construction-indexed. | VHA Prosthetics & Sensory Aids. VA Form 10-0103 plus a VA physician prescription. |
SAH and SHA can be used up to six times over a lifetime, not to exceed the current aggregate cap. HISA is a lifetime medical-services benefit, separate from SAH/SHA, and can sometimes be used in addition. VA decides stacking — not us. SAH/SHA caps usually reset each 1 October (next: FY 2027). Re-check VA.gov before a bid.
How to start (SAH / SHA)
- Read eligibility on VA.gov — Disability housing grants. The disability lists are specific (for example, loss of use of both legs, certain blindness, severe burns, ALS). “I have a rating” is not enough by itself.
- Apply with VA Form 26-4555 (Application in Acquiring Specially Adapted Housing or Special Home Adaptation Grant).
- If assigned, work with the VA SAH agent. They run the construction / adaptation process. Bids come from builders the VA will accept.
- Bring a design packet: photos of the rooms, what the veteran cannot do today, and a written scope. That is the useful KLM Ventures deliverable — not a promise the grant will fund voice lighting.
How to start (HISA)
- You must be enrolled in VA health care. Ask Prosthetics & Sensory Aids at your VA medical center. Facility locator: va.gov/find-locations.
- Get a VA physician prescription with medical justification for a defined project (which room, which change, why clinically needed).
- Complete VA Form 10-0103 (va.gov/find-forms/about-form-10-0103).
- If you rent: a signed, notarized owner authorization.
- Itemized estimate (labor, materials, permits, inspections) and a color photo of the unimproved area. VA may inspect.
Source for the HISA package: VA Prosthetics — HISA and 38 CFR 17.3105 (lifetime limits).
What KLM Ventures can attach
- Room-by-room photos and a one-page design plan from the free visit.
- Itemized quote for plug-in accessible setup (voice, lighting path, locks, sensors).
- A note separating plug-in work (us) from license-required electrical / structural work (licensed partners).
We will not complete Form 26-4555 or 10-0103 for you, and we will not tell VA you “need” a product we sell.

The free visit produces a one-page plan and honest prices. If a program wants bids, photos, or a written scope, that is what we produce. We do not promise the program will pay.
