Someone is coming home. The house did not go to the hospital with them. Discharge is a clock. That is why this buyer is motivated — not because they discovered “smart homes.”

Who is on the phone

Usually a daughter in Orange County or on the Westside. The parent is still in Sherman Oaks, Burbank, or a Laguna Woods cottage. A doctor used the word “falls” or “weaker.” An OT mentioned grab bars and lighting. The child is Googling at 11 p.m. because the discharge date is printed on a form.

Geek Squad will sell an app. A CAPS remodeler will quote a bathroom in six weeks. A pendant company will overnight a button. None of those change the hallway before the first night home.

What has to work the first night

  • Light from bed to bath without a scavenger hunt.
  • A lock that a stiff hand — or a daughter with permission — can work.
  • A doorbell or voice so they are not stranded if someone is at the door.
  • No new passwords. No “download the app.”

We can often start plug-in the same week as a visit. Hardwired electrical waits on a licensed partner — we say so in writing. If the OT asked for things we do not do (grab bars into studs, roll-in showers), we tell you that is a contractor, not us.
